Brief description

In professional practice, bioprocess engineers often work together with representatives of other disciplines. The ability to obtain and exchange information and to pass it on in the form of convincing oral and written presentations is therefore an essential component of successful interdisciplinary teamwork. Courses in “communication techniques” and “presentation techniques” have therefore long been firmly established at English and American universities. The aim is to learn how to use libraries and modern communication techniques and to present scientific and technical issues in oral and written form. The theory is taught in the form of lectures and applied in the form of exercises.

Teaching and learning outcomes

1 Basics of scientific work 2 Information management 2.1 How libraries, search engines and databases work 2.2 Reading and understanding scientific texts and patent specifications 3 Writing technical-scientific reports 3.1 Elements of a written paper 3.2 Creating graphics and tables 4 Oral presentation 4.1 Communication and human behavior 4.2 Selecting suitable media 4.3 Structure of a presentation 4.4 Leading scientific discussions 5 Group work 5.1 Working in teams 5.2 Moderating and guiding group work

Further explanations

Students work together in small groups on a bioprocess engineering topic of their choice, and are familiarized with research techniques, databases, interlibrary loans, etc. in the library. Lectures on the preparation of scientific presentations, preparation of measurement results, scientific writing prepare the students for technical papers such as reports, protocols, etc..

Presentations are practiced in short presentations (5 minutes). The topic of choice is presented in small groups and then summarized in a scientific report.

Graded examination
  • Project Report, written and Presentation
Remark on the assessment methods

Weighting of the partial performances: Project report (50%) + presentation (50%)

Exam duration and scope

Presentation: in groups of three, individual assessment 20 minutes (i.e. approx. 45-60 minutes in total)

Project report: scientific report as a group assignment and certificate, discussion of the report approx. 1 hour.

Recommended prior knowledge

German language

Knowledge Broadening

Students understand the principles of obtaining information from libraries, databases, etc. Students use various methods to obtain information and prepare technical data.

Knowledge deepening

Students know the advantages and disadvantages of the various presentation techniques with regard to the targeted transfer of information.

Knowledge Understanding

They can pass on technical information in the form of written reports and oral presentations.

Application and Transfer

Students can apply their knowledge to the development of new projects in group work. They are able to produce measurement results in scientific form in reports and present them audiovisually.

Communication and Cooperation

Students who have successfully completed this module have presentation skills and are able to present information in a well-structured media form.

Academic Self-Conception / Professionalism

Students are able to develop technical facts and principles, summarize them in a scientific report and present them
