Brief description

Quality care requires quality information. Accordingly, the course is intended to give students a first introduction to information technology for quality care and a modern health care system. This includes conveying basic knowledge about information systems in care processes as well as the organisation of digital transformation processes from an operational perspective.

Teaching and learning outcomes

1) Information and communication systems, their applications in health care organisations and related professional fields.

2) System-wide regulatory environment and health policy governance of digitisation in health care facilities.

3) Data, information, and knowledge in the health sector - including classification systems & interoperability standards

4) IT-supported workflows & process management: in particular process modelling and optimisation with the help of modelling techniques such as BPMN and UML

5) Information systems exemplified by the hospital information system, database management systems, architectures, overview of application areas, examples of selected applications for patient care and management.

6) Intersectoral and patient-centred digitisation based on applications in the telematics infrastructure - especially with regard to the electronic patient record

7) Digitalisation strategies, IT project management and tactical management of information systems

Knowledge Broadening

Students who have successfully studied this module have a basic understanding of information and communication technologies and their applications in health care. They can classify and evaluate which factors are important in the digitisation of care processes, how digitisation projects are implemented and what needs to be considered from a technical and organisational point of view when digitally representing health information and processes.

Knowledge deepening

Since this is a fundamentals course and the students usually have little prior knowledge about digitalisation in the health sector, the focus of this module is on broadening knowledge. Nevertheless, in the sense of deepening knowledge, students should be able to transfer and apply the knowledge they have acquired about the design of digitalisation processes to general socio-technical innovations or changes in clinical or administrative work processes.

Knowledge Understanding

The students know how to critically evaluate the opportunities and risks of the digitalisation of care processes with the help of information and communication technologies. In particular, they will be able to appreciate the opportunities of digitalisation for a paradigm shift in medicine towards precision medicine in learning health systems and can assess accordingly which strategic maxims of action should be derived from this for local digitalisation projects.

Application and Transfer

Students who have successfully completed this course will know how to deal practically with the procurement and implementation of IT systems. This qualifies them for jobs in healthcare organisations, as well as in industry and associations.

Students who have successfully completed this course will know how and where to further their education to gain in-depth knowledge. They are thus able to continue their education independently. Thus, they possess a characteristic that will be crucial for their professional career. They can demonstrate how they can use this knowledge for future positions and for which positions, which knowledge is necessary.

Academic Innovation

The digitalisation of health care is a highly innovative and dynamic field. Accordingly, students should be enabled to evaluate recent developments in the field (e.g. the introduction of the intersectoral e-prescription or intra-institutional decision support systems) with the help of multi-method approaches. This applies in particular to the application of (formative) evaluation techniques and internet-based research techniques.

Communication and Cooperation

Students who have successfully completed this course are able to assess related issues and form a differentiated opinion and communicate this to others. They learn this in practical exercises on the procurement and implementation of IT in the health sector.

In particular, they will be able to reflect the different requirements of digitisation processes from the perspective of different stakeholders (especially clinicians, IT experts, patients, business economists) and will thus be able to moderate between the stakeholders.

Academic Self-Conception / Professionalism

The students are able to assess their individual qualification profile, the expertise they have acquired as well as their moderating role in multi-professional digitisation processes and thus develop a professional self-image that is characterised in particular by cooperation and goal orientation in digitisation processes.

Linkage to other modules

Among other things, the module teaches the basics of process and project management. These basics are taken up and deepened in the business management project in the sixth semester.
