As part of the NitriKlim research project, all participants came together in Hohenheim for a project meeting. A central focus was the presentation and discussion of the results from field trials using various nitrogen inhibitors at different locations in Germany. Tobias Jorissen, Research Associate in the Department of Farm Management, actively participated in the discussions and contributed valuable business analyses and initial findings from an ongoing acceptance analysis of the project work. The meeting provided an essential platform for interdisciplinary dialogue and the further development of innovative solutions. The knowledge generated will flow directly into further research and practical applications.
The DigAForst research project was launched at the Coppenrath Innovation Centre (CIC). The project, funded by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture, aims to digitize and evaluate agroforestry systems in northwest Lower Saxony with the help of AI-supported robot technology. The ultimate goal is to identify new approaches for sustainable and economically viable land use. Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences, Holzmühle Westerkamp GmbH, and Nature Robots GmbH are working together to implement the project under the leadership of trafo:agar at the University of Vechta. Tobias Jorissen from Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences gave a short presentation on the economic aspects of the project and provided insight into the next steps. A practical highlight was the demonstration of innovative measurement and robot technology by Nature Robots. The participants then discussed the potential and challenges of agroforestry systems in workshops - particularly about ecological and economic issues.
On Wednesday, 20 November 2024, a new agroforestry system was planted on the Schockem?hle farm in Lohne in the district of Vechta - one of two demonstration farms in the DigAForst project. Three strips of valuable timber were planted on the five-hectare area with a diverse mixture of over ten different tree and shrub species. In addition to productivity, the ecological added value of these wooded strips is particularly important. Tobias Jorissen and project coordinator Beata Punte from trafo:agrar at the University of Vechta supported Dr Johanna Schockem?hle, farmer Reinhard Evers and Jens Burmester from Lignovis GmbH with the mechanical planting and gained an initial impression for the future economic assessments and agroecological research.

As part of his DiGAForst project activities, Tobias Jorissen attended the conference ‘Humus formation and agroforestry to reduce water erosion and flood damage’ organized by 3N in Moringen. In addition to various measures such as direct sowing, companion planting or the cultivation of the growing silphia, the establishment of agroforestry systems was presented as a promising option. Among the various exciting contributions, the presentation by Philipp Gerhardt (Deutsche Agroforst GmbH - Die Baumfeldwirtschaft) on agroforestry in keyline design for erosion control stood out. Woody strips planted in keyline design adapt to the relief of the agricultural land to ensure optimum water distribution and prevent water erosion.
