Laboratories and research groups in various academic disciplines at Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences offer international students the chance to gain valuable hands-on research experience over 3 to 6 months as part of a team.

The Internship Program is designed for Bachelor or Master students from international partner universities of Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences.
You need to meet the qualification requirements specified in the Internship Project Description and be fluent in English. German language skills are not required. Prior laboratory experience (on or off campus) is an asset but in most cases not a must.
You must be enrolled at your home university during your stay in Osnabrück.
Our lab and research projects have a duration of three to six months and take place either between March and August during our summer semester or between September and February during our winter semester.
Overlapping periods (e.g. staring at the end of the summer semester and ending at the beginning of the winter semester) are not possible.
The exact duration and timing of your internship will be determined together with your academic supervisor in the lab/project.
You will be enrolled as an international visiting student at Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences for either the summer or winter semester. This requires that you remain enrolled at your home university during your stay in Osnabrück. A learning agreement will be drawn up between you and Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences listing the lab or research project. Depending on the regulations at your home university, the internship experience can be counted as co-op or academic credit back home.
Depending on the timing of your stay in Osnabrück and subject to the consent of your supervisor at Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences, you may be able to take one or two classes alongside your lab or research project, for instance a German language course or subject-related class. Please bear in mind that in order to complete such a class successfully you would need to stay at our university for the full semester (lecture period + exam period). Most of our classes are taught in German, however we have a choice of modules taught in English
Upon completion of your lab or research project, you will receive a certificate and a transcript of records issued by Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences.
Application Deadlines:
- September 1 for projects between March and August (summer semester)
- March 15 for projects between September and February (winter semester)
International visiting students at Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences, who are already enrolled for a study term and who would like to extend their stay at the university for a lab project may apply at a later stage. They are requested to get in touch with the International Faculty Office for further advice.
You must apply online to Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences, Center for International Mobility (CIM) and submit the following documents:
- resume
- (unofficial) transcript of records
On the application form, you can rank up to 2 lab or research projects that interest you. The Center for International Mobility (CIM) will forward your application to the respective professor(s) offering the lab or research project, who will decide whether or not you are accepted. The CIM will let you know the decision by the end of September / mid April and – in the case of acceptance – supply you with detailed information on further steps:
If you are accepted, your home university needs to nominate you as an international visiting student at Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences. Deadlines for nomination:
- October 15 (for summer semester)
- April 30 (for winter semester)
Additionally, you will have to apply for admission as an international visiting student.
Deadlines for application as a visiting student:
- November 1 (for summer semester)
- May 15 (for winter semester).
Positions as a visiting student in a lab or research project are generally unpaid. You will have to reckon with expenditures of 750 to 850 euros per month to cover the costs of living in Osnabrück.
To take part in the Internship Program, you must be enrolled as an international visiting student at Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences for either the summer or winter semester (see Student Status above). For this, you must provide proof of sufficient health insurance. You can find more information about proving sufficient health insurance coverage on our fact sheet.
Depending on your citizenship, you may need a visa to enter into Germany (list of visa requirements/exemptions by country). Once you arrive, our team will help you register your address and, if necessary, apply for a temporary residence permit at the Foreigners Office. To obtain a visa or a residence permit, you will need to submit:
- proof of financial resources that shows that you have access to at least 853 Euro per month,
- proof sufficient health insurance,
- copies of all non-blank pages of your passport
- proof of acceptance or enrollment,
- and any additional documents required by the German diplomatic mission in your home country or the local Foreigners Office

The Housing Service of Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences will arrange accommodation for you in furnished rooms.
You will be allocated a buddy: A student in a higher semester will assist you in finding your way around the university and city.
