Compact courses

Business administration in healthcare:

If you have very good previous knowledge of math (e.g. advanced course), you do not need to take a preliminary course. Registration for the placement test in mathematics is sufficient. If you have less knowledge of mathematics, especially if you attended school a long time ago, you should attend the compact course in mathematics. The mathematics placement test is necessary for the “Business Mathematics” module in the first semester.

If you have good previous knowledge of accounting (e.g. commercial training), a compact course is recommended, but this is not compulsory. For students with little or no previous knowledge, the compact course or the semester-accompanying preparatory course in accounting is recommended.

As the “Business Mathematics” module is planned for the first semester, the compact mathematics course should be taken before the compact accounting course, unless you already have a good knowledge of mathematics.

If you have little prior knowledge of English, consuming English-language media can prepare you for the English placement test. The purpose of this is to place you at the correct level for our English courses during the semester. The English refresher course is designed for students who have not studied the language for several years.

Business Administration and Management and International Business Administration and Management:

International Management:

If you have very good previous knowledge in math (e.g. an advanced course) you do not have to take a preliminary course. Registration for the Placement Test Mathematics is sufficient. In case of lower knowledge in mathematics, especially if the school has been completed some time ago, the compact course in mathematics should be taken as a precaution.

There is no obligation to take the English Placement Test.

Attending the Preliminary Accounting Course makes sense before the summer semester (second semester), since participation optimally prepares for the lecture in the summer semester.

Public management and business administration in the healthcare sector:

If you have less prior knowledge of English, consuming English-language media can already prepare you for the English placement test. The purpose of this is to place you at the correct level for our English courses during the semester.

There is no need to take other placement tests or compact courses.

Business Law:

If you have lower prior knowledge of English, simply consuming English-language media can prepare you for the English placement test. As this has the purpose of assigning you to the correct level in our English courses during the semester. The English refresher course is designed for students who have not studied the language for several years.

The English compact course includes about 60 hours. During this time, students work intensively to improve their English language skills. The course is primarily reserved for freshmen whose experience with the English language is not recent or who did not have an English grade better than satisfactory in school.

Unfortunately, the compact English course will not be offered in summer semester 25.

In the compact mathematics course, students can refresh their knowledge, for example from the Abitur, and prepare specifically for the placement test, which is required in the degree programs

•     Business Administration and Management
•     Business administration in healthcare
•     International Business Administration and Management

in order to be admitted to the compulsory module “Business Mathematics”.

In the compact math course, the contents of the mathematics placement test, such as the basics of algebra, arithmetic, functional theory and differential calculus, including the discussion of curves, are taught intensively. The courses take place in presence at the Caprivi Campus in the CN building.

The Accounting compact course is for students with limited proficiency and aimed especially at freshmen. Students who have no knowledge of accounting, can participate in a semester-accompanying preparation course which will end with an exam, similar to the placement test. The compact course is aimed especially at those who want to pass the placement test before the start of the semester.

As part of the compact course, the content of the placement tests, the accounting and closing techniques, as well as the basics of cost and performance accounting are handled among other things.

The compact course is mostly aimed at students from:

• Public Management B.A. (otherwise: participation in semester-accompanying course in the first semester)
• Business Management in the Health Sector B.A. (otherwise: participation in semester-accompanying course in the first semester)

The compact course before the summer semester 2025 will take place from the 10.02. - 21.02.2025.

The course will be held from Monday to Friday from 09:00 a.m. to 02:00 p.m.

Preparatory course

For students who are not required to pass a placement test in accounting, but don't have any pre-existing experience/knowledge with accounting, there is a preparatory course both in english and german. The course will take place during orientation week and will be integrated into your week schedule.

The german preparatory course is mainly aimed at students of the following programms:

• Business Administration and Management B.A. (german tutorial, online)

• International Business and Management B.A. (german tutorial, online)

Preparatory course "Intensivkurs Rechnungswesen HGB" (Heike Balzer)

• designed for students from the study programm Business Law (LL.B.)
• will take place during orientation week, on the 26th and 27th from 9am-4pm. Further information will be send to you right before the course starts, via e-mail. You need to apply via our website to participate. The course will take place at the university.
